Art Monette, age 59 of Townshend, VT passed away at his home in Townshend on October 10, 2016 where he resided for the past 25 years.

Art was born Arthur E. Monette at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital on December 26, 1956 to Ora Monette and the former Bertha Frink.  Art had three siblings.  He attended Elementary School in Putney and graduated in 1974 from Brattleboro Union High School.  Art also attended various colleges throughout New England where he obtained credits for a counseling degree.

Art’s career included working as a Youth and Substance counselor at Ravenna’s Day and Foster Care Center and at the Brattleboro Retreat, both in Brattleboro.  Art later joined Kit Martin to create Townshend Auction Gallery, a business he loved, owned and operated with Martin for more than 30 years.  Art also was a firm believer in being involved in community affairs.  He served on the local Planning Commission for 18 years, and he was an invaluable supporter of, and tireless volunteer for, the Grace Cottage Hospital’s Annual Fair Day for the past 30 years.  He was also a strong advocate for area youths, regularly attending their sports events, giving them first jobs at the auction center, mentoring, supporting and being a true friend to them.  Several adopted him as “Dad”, and even though they are now grown, they will never forget, nor cease to be grateful for, his guidance and generosity.

Art is survived by his life partner of 40 years, Kit Martin, of Townshend, their beloved springers Miley & Maggie, daughter, Glory Mae Martin of Fredericksburg, VA, the Martin family of Jamaica and Westminster, Berenice Brooks of Townshend, the Daigneault family of Townshend, and the Litchfield family of Townshend and Newfane, together with a multitude of best friends which include longtime friends Kim Burwell of Harrisonburg, VA, Milt Sherman and family of Brattleboro and Townshend, his “most bestest friends”, Alfie Brookes and Fay Smith, both  of  Wells, VT, Scott Lynch  and Terri Garland, longtime friends and employees. Art was predeceased by his mentor and Grandmother, Lelah Boomer and his good friends Alice Martell from Brattleboro and Leroy Dunham from Jamaica.

Special thanks to longtime friend, “The Quack” (Dr.) Robert Backus, MD. Thank you also to Agnes of BMH Oncology and Dr. Marcoux of Dana Farber in Boston.
